Hapkido is a non-aggressive, defensive martial art that focuses on practical, realistic self-defence. It is advanced, yet simple, and is accessible to everyone.
At Sudbury Hapkido Club you will learn a range of ‘life skills’ for greater self-protection, including good personal safety habits, situational awareness skills and verbal communication skills. The physical self-defence skills of Hapkido will help you to protect yourself, as a last resort.
We teach traditional values with a modern, holistic approach in a safe, friendly, relaxed, unpressurised environment. Our club is suitable for all ages and abilities (age 10 upwards), particularly families, couples, women and seniors (age 40 to 60+).
Self-protection, personal development, self-improvement and well-being.

Hapkido is a Korean martial art with the primary emphasis on realistic self-defence applications rather than sports related competition. It is a comprehensive system which combines practical techniques designed to subdue or control an attacker, more typically associated with Japanese arts such as Aikido or Jujutsu, with the dynamic kicks and hand strikes normally associated with the Korean martial arts of Taekkyon and Taekwondo.
At Sudbury Hapkido we teach the syllabus of Hapkido Moo Hak Kwan, one of the oldest ‘Kwans’ of the Korea Hapkido Federation (the largest, wholly Hapkido, governing body for the Korean martial art of Hapkido, in the world).
Students will learn to avoid conflict but, if necessary, be able to react quickly, efficiently and effectively to protect themselves. The skills and techniques of Hapkido are taught gradually and progressively and include:-
Basic body positioning, movement and evasion skills
Dealing with close contact situations
Defending against grabs, holds and chokes
Blocking and defending against strikes and kicks
Counter attacking, including striking, kicking and throwing
Control and restraint techniques
Grappling and ground techniques
Defending against armed and multiple attackers
Hapkido is used extensively by police and prison services, the security and personal protection industry and military units around the world.
Our classes are available to men/women/youths (age14 – 17) and juniors (age 10 – 13). We welcome serious students who wish to learn this powerful and effective martial art and become part of our dedicated group.
Whilst learning how to protect yourself you will increase fitness, reduce stress and gain increased confidence in a safe and relaxed environment. Students are encouraged to advance at their own pace.
You can come and try a free introductory class or just come along and watch. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Our experienced, qualified instructors are licensed members of the European Hapkido Alliance and the Korea Hapkido Federation, insured, CRB checked and first aid trained.
