Lostock Hall library was built during 1961 and 1962 and was opened by Sir Harry Pilkington on 28 January 1963. It was the first library in Lostock Hall and was purpose built. In the 1980s the central garden was roofed over to provide a reference library, and the original reference area was converted into offices. 1999 saw work on the foundations of the library to prevent subsidence.
