Introduction to Medieval Medical History

£20 Make an enquiry

This introduction to medieval medical history provides an overview of the major influences upon and developments within medicine and its practice up to the seventeenth century. It is designed for the complete beginner, or someone who would like to refresh their memory of medical history!

In particular, it focuses on the influence of the medieval Church upon medical practice, and the ideas of Hippocrates, Galen and Avicenna. It asks: why was religion and medicine so interlinked in the Middle Ages?; what were the four humors?; and how did medieval men and women understand good health?

You will have the opportunity to work with primary written sources (in modern English) as well as images.
