The Citizen Advocacy Coalition
An Introduction to the National Coalition
of Advocacy Schemes and C.A. Coalition
The National Coalition of Citizen Advocacy Schemes was founded in 2001. Its aim being to promote and protect informal volunteer citizen advocacy. However, from its earliest days, it has taken on two main roles. One has been to promote informal advocacy within an Advocacy Plus context. The second has been to protect locally based Advocacy groups. The latter has led to our regional groups having a much wider constituency than just those groups involved in informal volunteer citizen advocacy. Indeed, many of our members have never been involved in the latter, but do subscribe to an holistic approach to advocacy.
Our national Assemblies in 2007 and 2008 recognised this reality and endorsed a policy of working in partnership with the Advocacy Resource Exchange (ARX) in helping locally based Advocacy groups meet the challenges that they face. The national Assembly on 14th October 2009 approved a change in name to National Coalition of Advocacy Schemes. A new Vision and Criteria for Membership and Working Constitution were also approved. The regional representatives form the national Executive Committee of the National Coalition of Advocacy Schemes (NCAS). Joe Monaghan is the elected Chief Officer, and C.A. Coalition facilitates the NCAS. Joe is also Company Secretary of C.A. Coalition.

National Advocacy Conference
Advocacy Resource Exchange will be hosting a national advocacy conference in Coventry on the 15th/16th November 2010. The theme of the conference will be “Make me a better advocate” and workshops and speakers will present on the tools that are available to support advocates in our work.
Advocacy exists to address the social exclusion experienced by many people, and challenges discrimination that often leads to the loss of rights for many. The aim of this event is to bring together advocates from organisations working with all client groups, providing any model of independent advocacy. It will provide an opportunity to network and share resources and good practice ideas to increase the capacity and effectiveness of advocacy organisations to provide quality advocacy.
Places are limited and booking forms and detailed programme will be available at the end of August. If you want to reserve your place now then please email your details to Andrea Dixon at [email protected]
The cost per delegate is £210 and there will be a 10% reduction for additional delegates from the same organisation.

Advocacy Resources Exchange
Advocacy Resources Exchange (ARX) is an organisation that provides information and advice about advocacy. Our aim is to create a more equal and just society for people who are marginalised and at risk of social exclusion, by empowering them through quality independent advocacy.
We do this by providing relevant information to:
people who want to find an advocate for themselves
a family member or friend who wants to help someone else to find an advocate
other professionals, such as a social worker, health professional or lawyer, who want to find an advocate for someone they work with.
We also work with advocacy organisations by enabling them to develop their skills and expertise, so they can provide better quality advocacy for more people. We provide general information to anyone that wants to know more about advocacy.

This event will be hosted by Parent Advocates Together for the Common Purpose 360 Network. PAT is an independent parent advocacy group based in the UK speaking up for parents with disabled children and children with additional needs. We are dedicated to transforming the lives of disabled children, their carers and their families.
We believe that people will achieve more by working together than they can by working alone. We support the efforts of those who seek success through that co-operative endeavour.
We believe that the only way to create a just and fair society is through power being spread evenly throughout society, and not arbitrarily based on wealth, class, gender or race.
Common Purpose 360 Network events are free local events, exclusively for Common Purpose alumni and invited guests that take place every year in every area in which Common Purpose courses are running.
Events are usually three hours long, and facilitated by Common Purpose. We aim for every event to be stimulating, topical and relevant to the locality. It is a fast and lively way to keep in touch with events and people in your area – and an excellent short-cut to knowledge and connections if you attend a 360 Connect Event in another location.
There are over seventy 360 Connect Events each year. All Common Purpose alumni will automatically receive an invitation to their own local 360 Connect. It’s up to you how many you attend - in any location, wherever suits you.
The 360 website has a calendar which lists them all, and all alumni are welcome to attend any Connect event without charge. However, space is often limited so we recommend that you book well in advance.
