I've been a practicing artist in both 2D and 3D mediums all my life, specialising in figurative sculpture and portraits(all mediums). I qualified as post 16 teacher in 2005 while working for Claverham Community Adult Education College. After two years teaching there I decided to hold independent classes and now run Mountfield Community Arts with my mother, Barbara Valentine , who teaches miniature painting, watercolours and mixed-media.
My Portrait classes are based on the traditional teaching practices of Art, to give students a real understanding of the basics i.e studying the skull and muscle structure, proportions and composition. With this firm grounding, students are confident to experiment with their own individual styles.
During the course I introduce all the drawing and painting mediums gradually, using demonstrations as a valuable learning experience.
I also write and illustrate teaching articles for the Leisure Painter Magazine, and give talks and demonstrations to local groups and societies.

Stone carving

Apprentice to Mos'e Tamburrini
I met Mos'e Tamburrini when he was 85, an Italian stonecarver who in his youth had taught Eduardo Paolozzi. He taught me how to use chisels, carve stone and the principals of glyptic sculpture. His words will always be with me, 'Simplify, simplify, simplify'. He was still carving until he died aged 95. Seek out and learn from the masters.

Wood carver

I learnt the art of woodcarving from Eddie Ware, studying the techniques of Grinling Gibbons and how to keep the chisels extra sharp.

Painter

Dates:
September, 1980 - July, 1988
Institution:
Apprentice to Louis Dodd
My father, marine artist Louis Dodd taught me how to prepare gesso/wood panels and all the traditional painting techniques he spent his life mastering.
