Techniques covered in this class include:
- Rolling out the clay to a consistent thickness
- Texturing and cutting out shapes
- Sanding, polishing and drilling
- Torch firing and basics of kiln firing
- Basic stone setting
- Adding multiple layers of clay
and much more.
We generally follow three projects throughout the day which include:
- A small stone set pendant.

However there is also lots of flexibility in terms of design and experimentation. By the end of the day you should have enough skills to go away and start making things from home. All materials are included in the class as well as full class notes. There will be the opportunity to buy extra clay if you need it and we also have tool kits for sale.

Stone Setting in Silver
Please note this class runs for two consecutive days
This is an intensive two day class where you will learn a range of stone settings which will really take your work in silver jewellery to the next level.
The main stone settings covered in this class include:
- A simple rub over setting, which involves creating a bezel and encasing a cabochon-shaped stone. This is a key technique for setting stones and is very useful to add to your repertoire of skills as it allows you to set a range of natural stones in a range of sizes.
- A tube setting, a simple yet effective technique for neatly setting usually small stones into silver tube. A great contrast to the rub over setting and adds a new dimension to your jewellery.
- Flush setting or gypsy setting, a neat way of setting your stones into the metal, which still allows a flat finish to the piece so that your stone is well protected and again this adds a new design element to your pieces.
During the course the tutor will also be taking about the qualities of different popular stones and considerations when setting them.
This class is very intensive so come prepared but it will really move your work on leaps and bounds and promises not to disappoint. All the materials including stones and silver will be provided.
This is an intermediate level course and students are expected to be confident at basic silversmithing skills, especially soldering.

For this class you don't need to bring anything but yourself as everything is provided. However, if you want to bring some of your own stones you can and the tutor will advise as to wether these are suitable for use in this class. If not then we can always give advise on how they can be used in future.

Texture Making for Metal Clay
Learn to make your own textures from pictures, print outs and much more!
This is a great class where our expert tutor Julia Rai will guide you through a range of processes for making your own texture tiles and plates. Perfect for use with metal clay, polymer clay and many areas of jewellery making.
When you first start working with metal clay and polymer, commercial texture tiles are a great place to start but as you progress, being able to make your own textures can really add a new dimension to your designs and opens up a whole new way of working.
In this intensive day class you will learn a range of techniques for making textures including Photo Polymer Plates (PPP) and the Tear Away Technique. Two key techniques for making textures that will set you well on your way to creating a new range of texture plates to set your jewellery apart from the rest.
The Photo Polymer Plates allow you to take black and white line designs and create unique deep texture plates for your metal clay. The 'tear away' technique allows you to make low relief texture sheets which are ideal for use with Keum-Bo.
Please note that no metal clay or jewellery pieces will be produced on this course as we will be using the whole day to focus on texture making.
The cost of this workshop includes a Photo Polymer Plate kit. The tutor will supply black and white images in all formats for you to practice these processes but if you would like to bring your own images, please do. For Photo Polymer Plates, dense black images printed onto transparent acetates are required. For the tear away technique, your images printed onto A4 sheets will be copied using a special photocopier. To get copies of your own designs, the tutor will charge £1 per A4 sheet so make sure you fill the sheet with designs.
